To continue the footwear theme: one of my Aspen passengers was wearing these beautiful Sketchers sandals.
She said that they are really comfortable too.

Day 235 - Crane Earrings

8/23/2010

One of my favorite pair of earrings. These origami cranes were made by one of my favorite 6th grade students years ago and I made them into earrings. I think that he used Post-It-Notes to make the cranes. We were probably discussing the book Sadako and the Thousand Cranes about the little Japanese girl who believed that if she was able to fold 1000 origami cranes, she would be cured of the leukemia she had as a result of the atomic bomb that fell on her city of Hiroshima. Today school children leave paper cranes at her memorial in the Hiroshima Peace Park. I wore them to a dinner for Seeking Common Ground, Building Bridges for Peace the other night. It seemed appropriate!

8/20/2010
These fun boxes have a cookie cutter as part of the base.
They were made in England for Department 56 and are part of a series.
I only have these two, but they came in lots of other designs.
I'm not sure if there was anything inside the boxes or not.

Day 231 - Hamsa

8/19/2010

This plaque came from Jerusalem.

It is combines several Middle-Eastern symbols the "evil eye"

for protection against bad things and the "Hamsa" hand.

The hamsa is a palm-shaped amulet popular throughout the Middle East and North Africa.

The hamsa is often incorporated in jewelry and wall hangings,

as a defense against the evil eye.

Day 230 - Folk Music Instruments

8/18/2010
These are the latest additions to my folk music collection:
the stringed instrument on the top is from Albania;
Becca brought the top flute from Romania;
the long center flute is made of birch bark and is from my recent trip to Norway;
and the bottom flute came from Greece.

The Romanian flute is played sort of like a Kazoo but with fingering
and the Norwegian one doesn't have any finger holes, you change the sound by overblowing and using your finger on the end.

Day 229 - "Blue Jeans" Cookie Cutter

8/17/2010
In the goody bag at the CCCC convention was this cute cutter, designed by our own local group, the Rocky Mountain Cut-Ups. The jeans cutter was packaged with a card telling the history of Levi jeans in an old pocket. It illustrated a part of California history because Levi's were invented there.

Day 228 - Presidential Cookies

8/16/2010
One of the speakers and vendors at our recent Cookie Cutter Collector's Club Convention was the author of "Presidential Cookies", Bev Young. This delightful book has cookie recipes and stories from each of the presidents from Washington to Obama.

make braids.

Day 223 - Henna Design

8/11/2010
At a party for Becca's friends the night before their wedding, the cousin of the bride had this amazing henna design. It was done by an African friend of her mother.
She was waiting the prescribed hours for the oil to dry so she could wash her arm. This kind of henna design should last for several weeks.

Several years ago I met another local henna artist. This is her web page:http://www.hummingbirdhenna.com/gallery.htm

We saw several at the folkmuseum the day before.

Day 210 - Bergan Farm

7/28/2010
House from Bergan farm at the Sigdal and Eggedal Museum. This house was the one where my great-great grandmother's family lived before she immigrated to Minnesota in 1857.

We took two buses from Oslo to get to Prestfoss. The Sigdal and Eggedal Museum indeed has a collection of buildings from the area and one is a "cottage" from Bergan farm. It took my breath away to walk into the house where my great-grandmother was probably born. The interior is mostly not original to the house but has a collection of furniture and clothing from a collector in the area.

The museum curator, Sigrid Kvisle spent several wonderful hours with us, telling us about the buildings, the collections and then making some waffle cakes for us to have with our tea.

She shared a book that has a history of the area. Then she called the current resident of Bergan farm, a distant cousin. His brother-in-law came to take us to the farm.
